That was a brilliant idea!
We loaded up bikes and helmets and donned jackets on a foggy July day on the Berkeley side of San Francisco Bay.
Who knew there was a bike trail hanging on the side of the Bay Bridge? Not me! How many times have I driven across that long white suspension bridge completely oblivious to the path running along its edge?
The wide Bay Bridge Trail, built exclusively for pedestrians and bicyclists, is punctuated by little vista alcoves and resting benches. It sweeps upwards in a gentle arc as it heads westward.
I peddled along in the easiest gear most of the time and stopped at several of the conveniently spaced alcoves for a quick breath-catching rest and a few photos. The little balconies provide sweeping panoramas of the San Francisco skyline, boats and ships on the water, and blue patches opening up in the overcast sky.
The trail’s western terminus is on Yerba Buena Island (with plans to stretch farther and ongoing construction). The viewing platform on the island looks back towards the East Bay and the bridge and bike trail across the water.
The return trip was pure delight!
Whoosh! All downhill!
It doesn’t get better than this—old friends and new adventures!

Great adventure Joan. Haven't been on a bike since we left Italy where we biked everywhere. Just walking along that bridge trail sounds about where I'm at now. Must give it a try!
How fun!! I've biked across the George Washington Bridge and the Verazzano in NYC but biking across the bay bridge would be a different experience. I'd love to do that sometime!
